Donuts with Friends
By: Meredith Peters
A couple of weeks ago, we went out to serve Donuts with Friends with members of our board who live in Colorado and we met many homeless people. We gave them Donuts, Coffee, Blessing Bags, Blankets and we talked with them.
One man was celebrating his birthday so we sang “Happy Birthday” to him and gave him extra donuts to share with his buddies as he celebrated his birthday. Another couple had lost their home after having some major health concerns and getting caught in a scam for work.
This lady on the street in the picture broke my heart. She was deeply hurt and looking for meaning in life. She wanted a friend and to feel valued as a person. I prayed with her and spent time listening to her stories of pain and I shared God’s love with her. I wanted to spend the whole day with her pouring more and more of God’s Word into her life.
As we left the area the little boy in the picture, one of the board member’s sons, said, “Mom why is that woman crying on the street, why doesn’t she have a car to sleep in like everyone else on the road.” The injustice of the situation of a lady being in pain and laying on the ground was not lost on this little boy.
It is an injustice to have a human being, a child of God, laying on the ground, crying in pain. It is not right and should not happen in Fort Collins, Colorado or anywhere in the USA!
“Give, and it will be given to you.” Luke 6:38a
