World Athletics has officially announced a brand-new competition: the World Athletics Ultimate Championship. This is a competition organised and funded by World Athletics itself, taking place over three days from 11-13 September 2026 in Budapest, Hungary. The biggest difference from previous competitions is that there will be no medals – only a single trophy and a total prize fund of $10 million, considered a record prize in the history of world athletics. The decision to create the Ultimate Championship stems from a calendar gap. According to the official announcement, the 2026 season is the first since the pandemic without an Olympic Games or World Championships as a concluding destination. World Athletics has seized this opportunity to build a new entertainment product, filling the void and creating a season-ending showcase. The competition is designed as an invitational format, for elite athletes only, with no public qualifying standards. To boost media appeal, the competition is heavily entertainment-oriented. The track will feature a black infield and a red carpet, a style inspired by Formula 1 and Grand Slam tennis. BBC will provide live coverage of all three days, considered the biggest distribution asset World Athletics has for this event. Two faces have been chosen as media focal points: Noah Lyles (USA) – world record holder in the 200m, and Armand Duplantis (Sweden) – world record holder in pole vault. Lyles will serve as MC of the event, while Duplantis is expected to perform a song before competing and aim for a new world record. This arrangement shows World Athletics shifting from regulator to commercial promoter. Unlike Grand Slam Track – a private competition that collapsed due to financial issues – the Ultimate Championship is funded by the governing body itself, meaning financial risk affects development budgets directly.
