Table Tennis England announces record DiSE intake for 2026-28: 18 new places and a gap nobody has measured

Table Tennis England has announced its Diploma in Sporting Excellence (DiSE) intake for the 2026-28 cycle, with 18 new athletes raising the programme's total membership to 36. Four names are given: Bly Twomey, Abraham Sellado, Kacper Piwowar and Adam Alibhai. Twomey already holds a Paralympic medal; the other three have represented England at the European Youth Championships.

That is almost the entire hard content of the announcement. No rankings, no international win rates, no head-to-head data. Only places and four names. DiSE is a qualification unique to the British sports system, blending academic study with high-performance training for teenage athletes who want to keep two paths open at once: elite competition and a career after retirement. Table Tennis England's table tennis programme runs on four tiers: Sport England funds it, SportsAid administers and allocates places, Table Tennis England owns the pathway, and SGS College delivers the academic side.

The new intake draws athletes from across the Home Nations rather than England alone. The process is described as open application, but the selection criteria are not published. The structure comprises five camps per academic year, eight units in the current year plus four more across 2027/28, one international camp between Years 1 and 2, and potential international competition in Year 2. On-table training sits alongside off-table modules: anti-doping education, nutrition, lifestyle, and a cultures, values and behaviours strand. Students also earn a Coaching Assistant qualification, a first-aid qualification and UCAS points.

The named list splits into two groups whose competitive structures differ in kind. Five camps per academic year points to a cluster-based development model rather than daily coaching. That suits athletes already embedded in strong club environments, while placing a heavier burden on the quality of each individual camp. The 2026-28 window sits entirely inside the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic cycle, with the international camp and possible Year 2 competition designed to produce juniors with international experience before the cycle's selection phase begins.

The Coaching Assistant and first-aid qualifications turn the programme into a supplier of technical staff as well as a supplier of athletes. This is the least-noticed element of the announcement: an athlete development programme that is simultaneously training the coaching assistants of the table tennis system itself. For a nation with deep historical roots in the rules of the sport but a modest position at the elite end, widening the human-resource base can deliver slower but more durable returns than chasing podium results alone.

The expansion from 15 to 36 members is presented as an achievement. But one gap remains unmeasured: the programme demonstrates funding capacity, not conversion capacity. No data links earlier DiSE cohorts to senior national teams. When places rise while conversion rates stay unpublished, readers are being asked to believe in an unverified causal link.

The smallest detail by volume and the largest by structure is the word interim beside the Head of Pathway title. When a fast-expanding programme is led by a temporary post, long-term strategy tends to slow and pivotal decisions get deferred.
