Emergency Funds Program -
By: Meredith Peters
It was a cold winter Colorado Saturday morning and we had a lot to do but it was so cold that we decided to pack some blessing bags before heading to Fort Collins. We made 20 blessing bags, thanks to everyone who donated to the general fund and/or donated items to the blessing bags.
We passed out all but 2 of the blessing bags and got to talk to a few of the homeless at the same time. We prayed for those that we had served and got ready to do our other Saturday morning chores, like stopping at the grocery store. I still had a feeling that we were not done serving the homeless, God was touching my heart. We headed to the grocery store and on the way in we saw them.
You know the people we were meant to serve that day. It was a mom, dad and 3 year old little boy, they were standing on the side of the road in the freezing weather. My first thought was how sad that the 3 year old was outside begging, 3 year olds should be in ballet, playing with friends, reading books, not begging on the side of the road in cold weather. Mom and I approached them with the last two blessing bags and then we read their sign, “Gas needed.” We asked where they were parked and if they could make it the pump. They said they could and started walking to an old beat up motor home.
The whole family walked to the motor home and the little boy told me that he didn’t like the snow because it was too cold. (Yes it is too cold to stand outside and beg when it snows!).
We offered to put gas in the motor home. I got to talk to the mom while we pumped the gas. She told me that they live in the motor home and that is also how the husband gets to work. It was their shelter and they were hopeful to some day be somewhere more stable.
I got to tell her that we would pray for her and her family and pray that they would stay warm. I was thankful to have the time to chat with her about her life and encourage her as she got gas in her home. I was most thankful that the 3 year old little boy was now in a warm place instead of the side of the road.

How did I get the call to serve the Homeless:

Today I was asked to tell how I got the call to come to Colorado and serve the homeless. I thought it was a great question and that I would answer it for all to read.
Todd, Payton and I were happily living on the Cape serving at a church when God started placing on my heart that my time was coming to end. Todd and I started to pray about where and how God was going to use our lives. My parents had the dream of starting Soaring Wings Ministries and they were praying for someone to come and help them get the ranch started and work on the property. They could not do it alone and after much prayer and talking we felt clear (through God giving us a clear calling to help the homeless families in Northern Colorado) that we were called to Colorado.
One afternoon when I was visiting my parents we went out to pass out blessing bags and do Donuts with Friends, as we were finishing and heading home, I saw a family digging in a dumpster. We stopped and they looked so nerves but there was a little girl and she came over to us and we offered her a blessing bag and she was so excited. She acted like she just received the best Christmas gift. We gave each member of the family a blessing bag. As we left they started to walk away from the dumpster. I was so thankful that little girl didn't have to dig in the dumpster for food that afternoon and that she could be so excited for the items in her bag. No child in America should have to dig through dumpsters for food. That interact was the clear call from God to serve the homeless, serve the less of these, and share God's love and hope for His Children.
We were excited to see God place the call on our live to go and serve the homeless in Colorado. God continues to guide us and we continue to lean hard on Him for strength, trust and grace as we serve the homeless.
